In this blog I have talked more about testing and issues related to the data on testing as much as any topic. As a disease detective, I know that our work can only be as good as the evidence we gather. This epidemic has revealed deep and troubling problems with our capacity to track infectious outbreaks. The politicization of data has made things worse. Once again, Vox does a good job of putting together the pieces. Key take-home messages: 1) We don’t have adequate real-time surveillance systems in place still; 2) We don’t have good metrics to gauge when the epidemic is contained; 3) It’s still very difficult to model the future of this epidemic.
